Dublin

A small friendly city that's split in two by the River Liffey, it only takes about 20 minutes to walk from the top of O'Connell Street in the north to St Stephen's Green in the south so everything is pretty much on hand and with a central hotel you'll never be far from where you want to be.

There's the popular Temple Bar area where those who want to party can be sure of an exuberant atmosphere every night of the week.

Another popular tourist attraction is the iconic General Post Office building on O'Connell Street which was the centre of the 1916 Rising, though completely burned out during the siege you can still touch the bullet holes in the columns and the façade. In front of the GPO you'll find the 'Monument of Light' or the 'Spike' as it has been more commonly known, a huge conical spire of stainless steel that reaches 120 metres into the air and sits on the site formerly occupied by nelsons pillar.

Shopping

  • If you're looking for a great variety of high street shops then check out Grafton Street or the near by Powerscourt Townhouse Shopping Centre for trendy shops and nice wine bars. For small, stylish clothing boutiques, jewellery and music go to the Temple bar area and if you're looking for traditional Irish handicrafts visit the area around Nassau and Dawson streets.

Eating Out

  • You'll find a great variety of restaurants, cafes and pubs serving Irish specialities such as Guinness, Irish whiskey, smoked salmon, stew and soda bread. It may be worth bearing in mind that eating out in Dublin is quite expensive compared to other EU cities.

Don't Miss...

  • A walk along O'Connell street and across the bridge to Dublin Castle
  • Trying Guinness in one of the many fantastic Irish pubs
